BW12: Spring Fling or Autumn Optimism

Today we celebrate the March equinox, welcoming Spring or Autumn, depending on where you are in the world.  Both seasons have something in common - nature's showcase of beautiful colors, bright and bold as well as rich and warm.  So let's dive into the season with our Spring / Autumn Reading Fling.

  • Read a book with flowers or leaves on the cover.
  • Read a book with the colors of spring or autumn on the cover
  • Read a book with Spring or Autumn in the title
  • Read a book about a Spring or Autumn Fling. (oh la la)
  • Read a book about life beginning.
  • Read a book about rebirth.
  • Read a book about life changing.
  • Read a book about wine or with wine on the cover
  • Read a book with any of the words from the poem below on the cover

Spring And Autumn.

By

Thomas Moore

Every season hath its pleasures;
Spring may boast her flowery prime,
Yet the vineyard's ruby treasures
Brighten Autumn's soberer time.
So Life's year begins and closes;
Days tho' shortening still can shine;
What tho' youth gave love and roses,
Age still leaves us friends and wine.

Phillis, when she might have caught me,
All the Spring looked coy and shy,
Yet herself in Autumn sought me,
When the flowers were all gone by.
Ah, too late;--she found her lover
Calm and free beneath his vine,
Drinking to the Spring-time over,
In his best autumnal wine.

Thus may we, as years are flying,
To their flight our pleasures suit,
Nor regret the blossoms dying,
While we still may taste the fruit,
Oh, while days like this are ours,
Where's the lip that dares repine?
Spring may take our loves and flowers,
So Autumn leaves us friends and wine.

BW11: March Equinox

Happy Sunday, dear hearts. Those darn clocks jumped ahead again here in the U.S. leaving us feeling a bit forlorn and bedraggled with the loss of that extra hour. However, we have plenty to look forward to with Tea for Two Tuesday, the wearing of the green on St. Patrick's day, and the beautiful blossoming blooms of Spring arriving for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere and the Autumn metamorphosis in the Southern Hemisphere.

Now would be a great time to read a book with Spring in the title or to get you in the mood for Autumn,  maybe a life in transition, reinvention, books in bloom or blossoms.

Check out Publisher Weekly's The Most Anticipated Books of Spring 2021, or Glitter Guide's Spring 2021 Reading List or the Book List Queen Top 21 Book Club Books for 2021.

What is your favorite color or flower or image of the season? Chose a book that reminds you of the beauty of Spring and/or Autumn.

Yesterday the twig was brown and bare;
To-day the glint of green is there
To-morrow will be leaflets spare;
I know no thing so wondrous fair
No miracle so strangely rare.
I wonder what will next be there!

Have fun following rabbit trails!

BW11: March Equinox

Welcome to my virtual parlor, dear hearts.  How is everyone doing?  We operate an audio repair shop which is constantly busy and we've been hearing all kinds of stories from our customers. A musician today said he's torn about whether he should cancel his latest gig or not as music brings happiness and keeps people from getting depressed. As it is a small venue, he says the people can practice social distancing.

As Plato said: “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.”

The same can be said about books too!  So this week we are celebrating the vernal equinox,  here in the Northern Hemisphere and the autumn equinox in the Southern Hemisphere.  Nature is in a state of glorious metamorphosis, a transition.

While we all hibernate as best we can, your mission this week is to read a book about things to do with nature, both physical and spiritual, seasons, spring or autumn, or transitions and all the wonderful synonyms that go along such as upheaval, growth, conversions, flux, etc.   You may also consider reading a book with Spring or Autumn in the title or spelling out the word Spring and/or Autumn.

BW12: March Equinox

Nature is putting on a spectacular show as we transition into Spring in the Northern Hemisphere and Patricia Cisco's poem captures the season.  It's also Autumn in the southern Hemisphere with the season's fall leaves of orange and yellow and red.   I have John Denver's You Fill Up My Senses running through my head so your mission is find titles or stories that resonate with the sights, sounds, and/or smells of the season.

Song Of March

With winter's footprints in the past,
and snows begin to melt at last.

With longer days and shorter nights,
the wayward winds of March take flight.

Four winds she holds within her grip,
then hurls them from her fingertip.

Her woolly, fleecy clouds of white,
she sets in skies of blue delight.

Her wild bouts of gusty breezes
roar through valleys, hills, and trees.

That high pitch whistling song she sings
awakens earth and flowering things.

She tears a hole in heaven's sky
so sun can shine and rain can cry.

She gently calms as spring draws near,
as blooming daffodils appear.

She welcomes April showers in,
then gathers up her dwindling winds.
Now her long journey home begins,

knowing she'll be back this way,
upon a cold, late winter's day,

when nights grow short
and days grow long.

Listen for her whistling song!

BW12: March Equinox

Bluebells and Wild Garlic in Blarney - Courtesy of Vagabond Tours of Ireland

The March equinox is upon us and Spring is in the air in the Northern Hemisphere and Autumn in the Southern half of the world. I'm feeling a bit flighty this week so I have a mini challenge for you.

Read a book with any of the following:

1) AIR in the title

2) Something AIR like in the title - Wind, breeze, Sky, etc.
3) Something in the Air on the cover - Plane, clouds, birds, etc.
4) Subject contains something to do with Air - Man versus nature
5) Character has a job in the Air - Pilot, trapeze artist. etc.
6) Read three books and spell out AIR
7) Contains Air within a word in the Title of the Book - stair, affair, millionaire, etc.
8) Unscramble Air - Ria, Ira, Ari - and read a book with that word in the title or by an author with that name.
9) Substitute another word for air that relates to the March Equinox and choose any of the above.
10) Choose any word relating to the March Equinox including Equinox, Hemisphere, Vernal, Autumn, flowers, etc and plug it into the Word unscrambler. Choose any 4 letter word and read a book with that word in the title.

Use your imagination and have fun following rabbit trails of flight.

Given angel's wings, where might you fly?
In what sweet heaven might you find your love?
Unwilling to be bound, where might you move,
Lost between the wonder and the why?...
